holiday woes

Holiday season... time for one or two happy days with friends and family and 29 additional days of stress and seasonal lack-of-daylight depression.

I'm headed up to Napa for the holiday weekend which should be fun, but first I've had nothing but car trouble for 3 weeks. Today I found out I'm looking at about $1200-1400 in repairs on top of the trip to the shop 2 weeks ago. ug. Add to that a rental car for the drive up north and xmas gifts and you're reading about one poor sap. The most annoying part is my mechanic should have fixed this problem 2 weeks ago, but was too busy and told me to continue driving it and to ignore the blinking check engine light. My new mechanic (the old one is dead to me) told me I could have damaged my catalytic converter by doing that which is another expensive repair. The current repairs will take a week plus and the shop is closed the weeks after christmas so I'm carless for up to 3 weeks. Good thing I have such cool friends that are all offering to loan me cars or carpool with me.

oh, and I guess it's better than not owning a car in New York right now. Kevin, I hope you have good walking shoes!

Right now I'm trying to run X sessions over EVDO and VPN to my laptop. Talk about slow! I get one page rendered every 5 or 6 MINUTES! Guess I should have stayed at work and worked with some good bandwidth.

So ya, xmas is coming, but right now, I'm tired and want to bury my head in a whole in the sand.

Come on people...

I couldn't let this one slide. I was cruising thru Amazon looking for some interesting books and was looking at some reviews of Richard Dawkin's "The Ancestor's Tale" when I found this gem:

Excellent but wrong, November 20, 2005
Reviewer: Tanya "Tanya" (Texas) - See all my reviews
Dawkins presents an excellent and informative account of evolution in this skillfully crafted and well-written tome. However, as some recent reviewers have noted, Dawkins is operating within benighted scientific orthodoxy and is therefore completely wrong. A simple syllogism proves that existence must have been Created:

Things that exist must have been created
Existence exists
Therefore existence must have been created

Another problem with evolution is the well documented 'dinosaur problem'. If the world was based on survival of the fittest, humans (and most other animals still around today) would have been killed off by the dinosaurs several hundred years ago.

So in conclusion: an excellent book despite its wrongness.

You know, she's right, those pesky dinosaurs really should have eaten our ancestors back in 1700AD. Good thing they had that Creator's protection.

Where do these people come from?

The Moral Animal

I finally finished "The Moral Animal, Why We Are The Way We Are: The New Science of Evolutionary Psychology" by Robert Wright. Anne loaned me this book something like 2 years ago and I've been slowly making my way through it. I highly recommend it to anyone as it's really fascinating and makes you think about a lot of things. If you can't make it through the whole book, read the first and last sections (intro and conclusion) and you'll have a pretty good idea what it's about.

Poor Anne though, I've dog eared like 20 pages and the book definitely looks a tad more worn than when it was loaned to me. Sorry!

New Kite Pics

As all 3 of you know, I spend most of my weekends at Mission Bay hoping for wind to kiteboard. A few weekends ago I got out on the water and noticed a local kiteboarder Tom standing on the beach with a really nice camera. So I thought, "what the heck", and I rode over near him to try some jumps. Nothing really worked for me as the wind was light, but I made five or six passes and tried some small jumps each time. I'm VERY surprised these pictures look as good as they do and it's definitely attributable to the camera man and camera and not the subject. I haven't seen close up pictures of me kiteboarding since I first started a few years back when I had no idea what I was doing so these have me really jazzed!

Sure, I have a really funny expression half the time (or all the time) and I'm riding a boat that doesn't want to really leave the water, but who cares, these pics are awesome! Thanks Tom!

Pics are here. Here are some favorites: Jump1 and Jump2

Shark attacks SR woman

More info on the shark attack. Sounds like the shark grabbed or got caught in the leash and took the board and girl under which may explain how she was able to grab the tail of a 12-16ft shark.

These surfers are cool though. I know a lot of people that would not have swam over to help! Pretty neat that they all swam in protecting her.

HoppingCow and Nicole got married

I went up to Napa over the weekend to see my family and for Brendan's wedding. It was a raging good time as so many of my old friends were there. I miss all of them a ton and one day was not enough.

I had a little moment while sitting in the 107 deg sun watching Brendan and Nicole exchange rings. It was sort of out-of-body (perhaps the heat) and I was watching everything from far away thinking, "wow, Brendan is now married! How incredibly crazy is that" Hard to believe and yet it looked pretty normal.

There are lots of pics from the trip here: Wedding pics

311 New Album!

This is what friends are for...

I've been so busy and stressed and just out of it that I didn't even know 311 has a new album! Anne texted to let me know they were on the radio, on Love Line no less. Thanks Anne!

So, new 311 album, Don't Tread on Me will be out Aug 16th. Go get it, or you're lame.

Their tour starts next week and they'll be here in SD on the 30th at the over priced Street Scene. I have half a mind to quit and follow them all around the west coast like an 18 year old. Damn mortgages...

Strange days

Sitting at home on a Saturday night. There's loud music coming from somewhere and I've been sitting too long. Took the strangest walk around the block. The music is coming from the community center, which is filled with young people dancing like it's going out of style to a blaring Grease soundtrack. Tried hard not to laugh. One corner later, watched a pimped out Mercedes try to get to 80mph in the 50 yards between red lights. Walked back in to Dennis Hooper ranting about the virtues of Kurtz.

Strange days...

Canon camera woes

I'm sure everyone noticed that there haven't been any new pictures up in my image gallery. That's thanks to my Canon S400 crapping out on me. A while back it started giving memory card errors that would, from time to time, go away long enough to get a few pictures. Now the errors are permanent and the camera doesn't work at all.
I did some searching around online only to find out that many people have had the same problem, right around the 2 year mark, just after the warranty is up. I emailed Canon support only to get the same answer that everyone else got; minimum $150-$300 repair charge, not including parts or additional damages. Wonderful...
It's too bad I told so many people to buy these cameras, I really hope that their cameras don't have the same problem.

I will give Canon one prop. They offer an upgrade to a S410 for $175. That's at least kinda nice. A $250 camera for only $175... plus the $365 for the camera that doesn't work...

Eli's selling his old Olypmus C4000 with the Light and Motion underwater housing. I'm thinking about buying that, but it's slightly more that $175. What to do, what to do.

Who's who?

The other night I stayed up way too late watching The Goonies specifically because I thought Mikey (Sean Austin) was E from Entourage. Turns out E is Kevin Connolly and I'm not very bright.

Anyways, Goonies is pretty funny. Chunk cracked me up.

Francis Fratelli: Tell us everything! Everything!
Chunk: Everything. OK! I'll talk! In third grade, I cheated on my history exam. In fourth grade, I stole my uncle Max's toupee and I glued it on my face when I was Moses in my Hebrew School play. In fifth grade, I knocked my sister Edie down the stairs and I blamed it on the dog... When my mom sent me to the summer camp for fat kids and then they served lunch I got nuts and I pigged out and they kicked me out... But the worst thing I ever done - I mixed a pot of fake puke at home and then I went to this movie theater, hid the puke in my jacket, climbed up to the balcony and then, t-t-then, I made a noise like this: hua-hua-hua-huaaaaaaa - and then I dumped it over the side, all over the people in the audience. And then, this was horrible, all the people started getting sick and throwing up all over each other. I never felt so bad in my entire life.

Earthquake #2

We had a nice kick-in-the-pants earthquake here in Napa last night. Someone evil fed me coffee at 9pm so I was reading away in bed when the room started growling and moving. Pretty good quake. Not like the little poopers we get in San Diego. This one growled and rolled for maybe 5 or 6 seconds. Turns out to have been centered only a few miles away on the other side of the mountain from us.

Quake info

No harm done. I got up to check the family and house and see how big it officially was. The dog didn't even move. I hit him with a door he was sleeping behind and he still didn't move. Dogs are great, but this one's not much of a protector.

Now, off to Mother's Day breakfast!

Rough day

got some bad news from home today. I'm having a little trouble deciding how to handle it and what to think. Have a feeling blogging probably isn't the right way to deal, but I need to write something. Course... I don't know what to say really.

I think I'm going to take a break from writing for a while. I know no one reads this anyway, but I'm realizing I don't have anything interesting to say anymore. You all know how I feel about our government and you've probably figured out I don't have much of a voice when I write. So, fewer post, hopefully better posts.

Well, just in case anyone doesn't know, my parents are two of the most amazing people walking (or limping in pop's case) this planet. I don't tell them that enough, but it's true. For anyone who knows me, just imagine, they've put up with me for 28 years. I love you guys.

Some Jam Bands Are Cool Too

Looks like I shouldn't drink and post. I misspoke and managed to say something along the lines of "all jam bands suck." That's not exactly what I meant. There are some very good jam bands out there and some of them are even interesting. I don't like some jam bands. That's a better comment.

An intersting post for later, "Why music is so personal and I'd rather someone insult my clothes, friends, car, or lifestyle before they insult my favorite bands."

Music is rad

So I came home tonight after a long day meaning to play some mindless video games. See I installed Age of Empires II again last night. We used to play this game for hours and hours at my last job. So much fun we had while we thought we were working hard. I miss those days, not the pay mind you, but the good people and playing games during and after work. AOE is a load of fun, kinda like chess only more fun. Anyway, I never got around to playing tonight as I started up WinAmp and browsed through the WinAmp Videos. I'm not watching a 30 song play list of streaming videos.

I miss how into music I used to be. I don't care what the press says, I bought more music, listened to more music, went to more concerts, and shared more music with my friends back when Napster, mp3.com, and the like were around. Today music has gone back to the pre-internet days when everything we hear on the radio or TV sucks. Just plain sucks. It's all crap. I have no idea what bands are good anymore and I've found myself at too many jam band concerts. Some how I seem to think that because they are some jam band that's not on the radio they must be good. Well they suck too. I don't want to dance for 3 hours to music that has to release. I want tension and RELEASE!!! I want big loud guitars and drums, huge wanking guitar bends, slapping bass solos, screaming lyrics that no one understands! What happened to all the good music? I have a feeling it's out there, but we don't know about it because Clear Channel won't play it and the record companies pour all their money into Jennifer Lopez, Brittney Spears, and Justin Timberlake. bah...

I'm pretty excited about NIN and Weezer releasing new albums. Maybe they'll be decent at least. Maybe I'll actually pay for them. That is if they aren't $17.99.

Back from Pittsburgh

Over the weekend Anne and I took a great trip to see her family and home town of Pittsburgh PA. We made it back safe with only minor cases of jet lag and smoke inhalation.

Some highlights:
* Not working Friday and Monday and actually leaving my laptop in California
* Coming out of the fort Pitt tunnel to see the downtown skyline and the ball parks for the first time.
* Seeing embarrassing childhood pictures of Anne and Dan plastered around the house
* The Red Room bar/lounge and meeting Karen, Anne's bestest friend.
* Karen's face when she discovered the "special" house drink at the Marti Graw bar is a screwdriver.
* The small lake near Anne's house
* Waking up hungover at 10am, re-waking up at 10:45am sans hangover
* Dinner at Monterey Bay Fish house with the whole family.
* Talking golf, law, cars, houses, computers, mp3 players, country clubs, jazz, and art with Anne's dad
* Snow
* Locking myself out in the snow for an hour.
* Jody driving up to visit for an afternoon
* Hanging out with Jody and Anne eating Panini Brothers sandwiches (which include french fries and coleslaw ON the sandwich)
* Warhol museum
* Anne's mom bbq'ing outside in the snow
* strawberry shortcake
* Meeting Aunt Jane
* Lunch with Walter Anne's old boss from Family Services.
* Sunset from 30k feet on the way back to San Diego.

The only lowpoints:
* Locking myself out in the snow
* Leaving my mp3 player in Pittsburgh
* Having to wake up for work today. Vacations should never end.

So many stories to tell! I even made a list of things to write about. I wonder where I left it...

Removing Red Wine from Carpet

So I managed to spill a full wine glass of deep red port on my new carpet last night. I'm still not sure what happened, but some how my laptop hit the glass and it went off the table and made a nice big stain with tons of little splattered marks. Believe me, I wasn't so happy. Ran upstairs to grab the instruction manual for my carpet (yes, I have an instruction manual!) and it suggested ammonia. Now if you're a twenty-something male who lives alone, why would you have a bottle of ammonia? I sure don't, but somehow I thought about Windex. Windex claims to have ammonia in it, so wtf, I'll give it a shot. I've tried just about everything else at my last place and that carpet looks terrible.

Windex removes red wine stains instantly!!!

It really is amazing. A little squirt of Windex and Anne and my jaws dropped. After soaking up the Windex with some water and letting it dry overnight it is very hard to find the stain and so far, no adverse effects from the Windex.

Even though I stained my new carpet I'm pretty excited to discover Windex.

AM lawn mowing

Why is it that gardeners think it's cool to cut the grass early in the morning? Every place I've lived, some schmuck gardener decides to cut his grass early and wakes my ass up. Today I woke up thinking, "Is that a lawnmower? It's sounds far away. There's only a 3ft by 4ft patch of grass outside, he's probably not coming here." Well, he did. The best part is since it's morning, the grass is wet so his mower got stopped up 3 times on that little patch of grass. Maybe I should enter the gardening business and present my novel little idea to the board of gardening directors. Cut the grass in the afternoon! It's dry then and no one normal is sleeping!!!

Skateboarding is a crime

Looks like I lost a battle at work. A few of us decided a few weeks back that it's lame that smokers get a break to go outside every hour, so we decided to start taking a walk in the afternoon around the industrial park. Get some fresh air, chill out, stand up, walk away from the endless work, reset. The walk eventually turned into us riding long skateboards around the empty back area of the parking lot. This was great fun, and harmless, until now...

Last week we spoke to 2 different security guards who told us, go ahead, just wear your badge so they know who we are. This week a new guard told us we were not allowed to skate in the lot and if we had a problem with it, go email security. Of course I did. The email made it up the chain of management and was answered today not by security (cuz they don't have a rule at all) but by facilities with basically, this is a leased building, landlord says no, please stop. Load of crap. They didn't even bother to answer my sincere questions in my email about where we might skate if this parking lot is off limits.

So now, I'm really annoyed again. We aren't hurting anything or anyone, enjoying being outside, enjoying the GIANT empty lot, but we have to stop. I think that's lame and retarded. Guess I'll stay inside, hunched over staring at monitors, or perhaps head home to watch the boob tube. We wouldn't want people outside exercising and having fun now would we? No, that would be wrong because we might fall and sue someone. Excuse my language but this is bullshit.

I've also been told by my management to drop this immediately. Apparently there are other battles being fought by them that I'm not privy to that this could affect. So, like any political battle, I get to suck it up and shut up. Lovely.

Remember folks, you're all at the bottom of the totem pole, don't make waves, even small ones, because the other fish are all bigger than you.

Cheers

Ok, so I've talked about this before, but I think the synapses that understand the difference between affect and effect are completely gone. Found this nice little quiz that proves I just don't get it....
