The Pope's speech
I got a little curious about what exactly the Pope said to cause such a ruckus. Below is his entire speech:

The wonderful thing is Dean's bit follow a wonderful daily quote from Bush where he obviously tried to ad-lib and sounded like a 3rd grade child. Dean on the other hand spoke very well. How come one is our president and the other gets laughed at?

Knee Surgery
Knee surgery was yesterday and went really well. I didn't get sick from the anesthesia and I feel pretty good. So far, I'm in very little pain and I've even started to wonder if they just strapped a bandage on me and didn't cut me at all. hehe. Those tricky doctors.
I'll be working on my web sites this week, so look for changes. Plus I have been working on a post about 9/11 conspiracies that should be live soon. Course the Pentagon just released this today to help me out.

Found Snake
I forgot to mention that I found my snake Sue. He was hiding under the fridge. He's home again in a nice clean terrarium.
He had quite an adventure in my house though. He made it up the stairs to take a poop, and then back down to hang out in the kitchen.

Lost my snake
I'm officially a bad parent.
Seems I left the lock pin out of my snake's aquarium the last time I opened it. Now I have an empty tank. I'm not sure how long he's been out, but I know I didn't look at him yesterday, so possibly days. I've searched high and low and he's hiding good. How a 4 and a half foot snake can disappear in my uncluttered house, I'm not sure, but it's depressing me greatly.
On the off chance that Sue has figured out this internet thing, please come out of hiding. I've got a yummy mouse for you

Kiteboarding in San Quintin
Last week, it was determined that I actually do need to have a surgery on my knee from the snowboarding incident. The arthroscopic surgery is set for May 15th and I've managed to convince myself that everything will be fine and cheer up a little bit. As a treat to myself, I decided to get as much kiteboarding in as possible in the next 4-5 weeks. Step one... kiteboarding trip!
Anne and I joined about 10 other San Diego kiteboarders on a weekend trip to San Quintin Bay in Baja Mexico. The trip turned out to be a great adventure and we had a lot of fun! San Quintin is a huge bay about 4 hours into Baja that is surrounded by small volcanic mountains. The wind there is usually very steady (so I've been told) and the bay makes a great, crowdless, kiting spot.
We got there Saturday early afternoon and as I pulled up to the beach the kiters that arrived the day before were just coming off the water to put up smaller kites. I set up a borrowed 9m kite and grabbed my smallest board (a 146cm). Now, I've never gotten a chance to fly in high winds and have never flown a 9 on the water and I learned real quick what a fast moving kite can do! My first water-start put me face first in the water and then quickly 3 feet in the air as I righted the kite. That was fun and no harm done, a quick adjustment and off I went. Within 45 minutes I had to come off the water as my knees were killing me from the chop and I had the kite completely depowered as it just got more and more windy.
That was it for my day as I didn't have a smaller kite. I packed up my gear and took some pics of the guys on smaller kites. A few hours later, the real adventure began as we headed to dinner. 3 hours and one flipped off mexican waiter later, we all headed to bed with upset stomachs thanks to the aptly named "ass cheese" that was on our food.
Sunday turned out to be a great day with pretty good winds. I was able to ride a 12m kite and my 146 for about 2 hours before my knees and the wind asked me to stop. I really like flying at 12m kite and I wish there were more opportunities to fly one around here. I even chanced a few jumps, ignoring the complaints from my knees, and was surprised at how gentle and floaty they were with what in my mind is a small kite. Anne and I packed up early and headed for boarder traffic. The drive during the day is beautiful and helped me forget all the reason I usually don't like Mexico.
In the end, it was a great trip without any issues, illnesses or injuries. Anne was great at navigating any spanish conversations and I'm bordering on actually understanding them. Some pictures are here: San Quintin Kiteboarding

K3rm1t exposed...
So I posted a thread on kiteforum.com today with pics from this weekend's kiteboarding. That thread is driving unusual amounts of traffic to k3rm1t.net. It's Monday...
I had a great weekend, but had a hell of a time getting into work today. Friday we had a little celebration for a large work project at the Wave House in Mission Beach. We got to ride the wave for an hour and man was it fun! It's not at all like surfing as the boards have no fins and it probably takes more than an hour to really learn to ride. I'm terrible at it, but I'd totally pay to go back. There are some ridiculously huge pics here.

Meade mystery
So I just noticed someone who goes by the name "Meade" posted a comment to one of my pictures. The interesting part is that s/he posted the comment to an image of my condo being built, but the comment is about Clyde's Ride. So, I had to dig. Checking my logs, I can see that he found this old story about the band from an old version of my site. His search engine didn't provide a referrer so I can't tell where he came from, but I can see that he found the pics from the band's last show and then had a whirlwind tour of my other pics, assuming looking for old friends, or perhaps just admiring the beautiful people.
Well Meade, sorry there aren't more UCSD alumni in my photos, but I am a late comer to the digital camera revolution and most UCSD'ers that I knew have long since left the sunny beaches of San Diego. Looks like you're still around, we should start a Damnit-Clyde's-Ride-Quiting-Foolin-And-Play-Some-More-Shows club. We can meet once a month, share bootlegs and stories of the good 'ol days, and drink beers. Or just drink beers...

NO SURGERY!!!!
Just saw my knee surgeon (for my second opinion) and he thinks everything looks ok and I don't need surgery!!! He thinks that, due to how the injury happened, I dislocated my kneecap. This in turn caused the swelling, pain, discomfort, etc. I have dislocated my kneecap on my left knee about 7 times and the pain is similar to how my right feels. It obviously wasn't bad enough that it stayed dislocated.
The ding that shows up in the MRI is not significant in his opinion to warrant surgery. He gave me another brace to hold my patella in place and sent me on my very merry way. If in 6-8 weeks I have any popping, clicking, or locking, they will still need to scope it, but let's hope that doesn't happen.
I feel pretty darn good right now. And due to the miracle of positive thinking, my knee feels better. I may still have damage in there, but at least I have a stay of execution.

Upgrading home computer...ug
So I've been thinking about my home computer a lot lately. It's in dire need of some work. I spent a few hours this weekend cleaning up spy/mal/junkware on it and it made me realize what a POS it is.
It's one of those cheapo Dell machines and I think the multiple power outages at home have done some damage to the harddrive. I've been thinking about putting an additional drive in there (for mp3's and images), but now I'm thinking I need to throw together a RAID or buy some NAS device. ug... That's going to hurt the bank.
How is everyone else dealing with backing up data and the wonderful world of failing hds? Do tell!
In the process of upgrading, I think I need at least 2 more LCDs and some sort of ethernet mp3 device to connect my mp3 collection upstairs with my stereo downstairs. oh, and maybe a water cooled overclocked cpu... and a robot... that does massage...

My own MRI
I had to pick up some medical records from my orthopedist today to take to my surgeon. One of the things I picked up was copies of my latest MRI on my right knee. MRIs are really friggen cool. I've been pouring over the images and posted a few that show some of the things wrong in my knee.

Saw the doctor again this morning for the results of my MRI on my knee. After a 55 minute wait to see the doctor, we looked through the MRI images again and the official "reading" of the MRI. The first note on the reading stated there was effusive fluid (i.e. swelling) in my knee. ya, duh...
The rest of the results point to another lateral osteochondral defect, just like my other knee. My doctor is thinking it's not as bad as the other one was and may not need the same allograft surgery. I may only need a good scope and possibly a microfracture procedure (6 weeks recovery), instead of the allograft (12 weeks zero weight bearing). We decided to wait 2 more weeks to see if things get better and we can push off the scope, but we'll most likely have to do it soon. Let's hope it's a small defect...

San Quintin
I took a road trip down to San Quintin Baja this weekend and had a great time. This was supposed to be a kiteboarding trip, but thanks to my new injury it was only a photography trip for me. Anne and I drove down with Dan and Cathy, and we met up with David via mutual friends. David turned out to be a wonderful addition to the trip as he spoke great Spanish and knew the area very well. Without him, the 4 of us would have been poking around lost most of the trip. Unfortunately for Dan and David, there was very little wind on Saturday and none on Sunday.
We stayed at a nice hotel on the beach with some great views of a huge sandy beach. The weather was cool, but sunny and it was extremely relaxing to turn off the cell phone for 2 days. David showed us all the kiting spots in town and the good places to eat and we'll definitely go back in spring/summer when the winds pick up. I hope that I'll be able to kite rather than just take pictures, but I'll go anyway.

The only thing that happened that wasn't planned was a flat tire after dinner Saturday night. Dan's minivan had low profile tires that didn't take well to the dirt washboard roads. Luckily we had a lantern and the spare held out for the remainder of the trip. The main road in Baja is much nicer than it used to be and only the lack of condos and the grubby local towns remind you that you aren't driving through southern california. Baja really is a beautiful place.

I Lack judgment
That's right, I lack judgment. And possibly a working memory.
Last year, after another season of snowboarding, I told myself that I was done. Snowboarding hurts my knees so much that it affects the other sports I do. Those other sports are more important to me than a few weekend on the snow each year, so I told myself I'd quit.
I must not have meant it, I didn't sell my gear.
It's snow season again and like a brainiac I got excited and signed up for a few boarding trips. Spur of the moment, I jumped in with some friends for a quick weekend get-away to Mammoth.
Day 1: snowing hard. Windy, cold, foggy, cold. Cold. My out of shape legs burned with each turn, but it felt good to be back on the snow, never mind that little click in my good knee.
Day 2: beautiful, sunny, powder! Amazing day of riding. Tree runs in foot deep pow-pow. Riding through the trees off chair 9 I had a bad toe-side turn. Cut too hard and came to a stop and crunch, my good knee goes down in the snow.
I knew right away I did something bad. It wasn't extremely painful, but it didn't feel normal and I had visions of the days in college when I walked around with loose cartilage floating around inside my other knee.
I managed to ride down the mountain somehow, but the moment I took off my board, I knew I was done. I could barely stand.
Limped back to the condo; showered, iced, Alieved, thought
"Why did I snowboard again?"
"I knew this would happen!"
"What about the future trip that's already paid for?"
"You're an idiot"
"What about the kiteboarding trip next weekend?"
"What about kiteboarding?!?!"
"What if I have to go through that cartilage surgery again?"
"Why am I such an idiot?"
"Why can't my body keep up with me?"
Saw the ortho doc today. Xrays look fine, ligaments are fine, knee cap is floating in fluid, disgusting popping noises when moved, need an MRI to see if I tore a meniscus or developed a new cartilage hole like my other knee. Either way it's not good, my season is over, my kiteboarding trip ruined, my mood lowered, my plans for the future quickly altered. All from one bad turn...
So, in the end, what's better; living for each moment while it lasts, milking life for every drop, or being conservative and carefully planning for the future?
